CARLO MEJIA FINE ART

Symbolic, Poetic, Innovative, Inspiring. These are the words to describe the universal art of Carlo Mejia.

Born in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1945, Carlo Mejia, inherited a magnificent legacy from his Mayan ancestors. He was raised by his grandmother who firmly believed in tradition, and valued education, which shaped his development.

The family was limited financially. Mejia, his brothers and other extended family members shared a simple home.

Mejia always new he would be an artist, and at age six was already painting. His uncle recognized his unique talent and nurtured it. His grandmother wanted him to have a more substantial profession and urged him to become a doctor.

Fascinated by the mythology of his ancestry, Mejia acquired scholarship and designed sets for the National Theatre of El Salvador which allowed him to pursue his artistic identity. Mejia and a group of Salvadoran artists established the Uquxkah Academy of Art where he received his degree in fine arts.

Mejia established his studio in San Salvador, exhibiting his powerful symbolic images in El Salvador and abroad, sharing with the world his passion to express man in the context of his humanism.

In 1980, he fled the civil war in El Salvador with his wife and Family came to the United States, taking with him one suitcase of personal belongings. Tragically, the contents of Mejia's studio remained in El Salvador, only to become additional casualties of the war.

Mejia began a long and difficult journey, but never allowed his plight to conquer his spirit, nor prevent him from pursuing his art. Whenever possible, he saved to purchase the materials necessary to continue to create through his drawings, paintings, and porcelains - refusing to extinguish his internal flame.

Today, Carlo Mejia's work is included in private and public collections around the world. Since his arrival in the United States, He has also exhibited in Madrid, Montreal, New York, Washington D.C. and Miami.

Carlo Mejia's innovative techniques and artistry are redefining new boundaries in mainstream Latin American art. His works in painting and porcelain has taken numerous years to perfect. Even now, he will reveal only part of how he masterfully works these mediums.
